After months of wedding planning, preparation and the day itself, your honeymoon should be that perfect getaway with lots of relaxation and quality time together.
Whether it’s a short haul beach holiday or a bucket list around the world trip it should be well planned with as little stress as possible, here are a few tips to ensure you enjoy the trip of a lifetime.
1 Timing
Do you want to be jetting off as soon as your wedding day is over or do you want a ‘mini-moon’ initially with your main honeymoon delayed to ensure the timing works better for you or to time it to coincide with better weather in your dream destination?
2 Plan early
The ideal time is six to nine months ahead of your chosen travel date, especially if it will fall during the busy summer season, you want to get your first choice of destinations, hotels, rooms etc not what is left. Also bear in mind if it is a very specific hotel or room/suite etc you may want to be planning a year ahead.
3. Plan together
This may well be one of the first decisions you make and plan together, there will be many more less fun ones along the way! Make sure you incorporate elements that are important to each of you.
4. Taking advice
I’m sure your family and friends will all have an idea of what they think you want and what they think you will enjoy, it’s always good to get another opinion and perspective but keep in mind that this is all about the two of you.
5. Brainstorming
Grab a bottle of wine or a couple of beers and have a nice lazy evening together deciding on your dream destination - Is it somewhere exotic, a deserted island, a luxury all inclusive resort or the adventure of lifetime. Daydream together to determine your perfect trip.
6. The budget
Wedding expenses soon add up but remember your honeymoon will last a lot longer than your wedding day and is about the two of you not everyone else so try not to dip into your honeymoon fund once you’ve established what funds you have available. You will be creating more memories that will also last a lifetime.
7. The extras
Don’t get caught out with the extra expense of the details that are not so much fun - You still need to park the car at the airport and arrange transfers at the destination, do you need to arrange a VISA, how much are the resort fees? These are some of the hidden costs that will catch you unawares if you are not careful.
8. Departure day
You don’t have to leave directly after the wedding or even the following day - It’s usually a pretty stressful run up to the big day and a long, lovely but tiring day on the day so if you’re Wedding day is a Saturday maybe travel on the following Monday or Tuesday to give yourselves some recovery time.
9. Surprise!
Although planning together is important it might still be a lovely romantic gesture to throw in a couple’s massage or a special dinner for two in a lovely restaurant as a lovely surprise for your loved one
10. Switch off
Here’s the difficult one! All your loved ones will want to know you are having a fabulous time and want to see pics of your amazing surroundings but that can wait, let everyone know you have arrived safely, then switch off! Take lots of pics to share when you get home but live in the moment and enjoy this special time together.
